High winds can strip tiles, bring down chimney pots and flood lofts in minutes. What you do in the first day makes a big difference to the cost of putting it right.
Stay safe first
Never go on the roof yourself. Keep people away from areas below damaged chimneys or loose tiles, and switch off electrics in any room where water is coming through a light fitting.
Photographs taken in the first hours are the strongest evidence for your insurance claim.
Limit the damage inside
Move furniture and valuables away from leaks, put down buckets and towels, and if water is pooling on a ceiling, call a professional before it gives way.
- Photograph all damage inside and out
- Keep receipts for emergency spending
- Note the date and time of the storm
Call an emergency roofer
A good emergency roofer will make the roof watertight the same day, then give you a written report and photos for your insurer before carrying out the permanent repair.
