Blocked gutters are one of the most common causes of damp walls we see in London homes, and one of the cheapest to prevent.
The short answer
Twice a year for most homes: once in late autumn after the leaves fall, and once in spring. If you have large trees nearby, add a third clean in early winter.
Most of the damp walls we are called out to start with a gutter nobody has looked at in years.
Signs your gutters are blocked
You do not need to climb up to check. Watch your gutters during heavy rain.
- Water spilling over the front edge
- Plants growing out of the gutter
- Damp patches on walls below
- Gutters sagging away from the fascia
Should you do it yourself?
Bungalow gutters can be cleared safely from a stable ladder. For two and three-storey London houses, we always recommend a professional with the right access equipment.
